Trigeminal Neuralgia
The chief symptoms of Trigeminal Neuralgia is
short, excruciating pains in the facial area due to
stimulation given by the trigeminal nerve.
Trigeminal nerve by it's name is made up three
divisions; the ophthalmic, the maxillary, and the
mandibular branches.
The clinical features of this sudden attack is
spasmodic electric like shock lasting few seconds
to minutes in the face. Attacks may occur up to
several times a day, especially when the facial nerves
are being stimulated; for example when washing face,
eating, drinking or talking.
Another characteristic seen in Trigeminal Neuralgia
is that it only affects one side of the face most of the
time and due to it's sudden onset, there are no symptoms
between attacks which make it difficult to control the
severity of the attack.
Study have shown that the incidence is higher in middle
aged women than in other groups.
Condition must be distinguished from other forms of
facial neuralgia caused by disease of the jaw, teeth
or sinuses.
